The Correlation Between Students’ Metacognition and Their Writing Ability (A Study to the Fourth Semester of STKIP “Tapanuli Selatan” Padangsidimpuan in 2011/2012 Academic Year)

The objectives of this study are to find out: a) the extent of the students’ metacognition to the Fourth Semester of STKIP “Tapanuli Selatan” Padangsidimpuan in 2011/2012 Academic Year, b) the students’ writing ability to the Fourth Semester of STKIP “Tapanuli Selatan” Padangsidimpuan in 2011/2012 Academic Year, c) whether there is significant correlation between students’ metacognition and their writing ability to the Fourth Semester of STKIP “Tapanuli Selatan” Padangsidimpuan in 2011/2012 Academic Year. This study is designed by using descriptive method. It aims to describe all of data or condition of research subject in this research. The data refer to the research variables, students’ metacognition and their writing ability. Students of the Fourth Semester of Engslih Department STKIP “Tapanuli Selatan” Padangsidimpuan are population in this research. Where, they are 109 students. Because the population is relative large, therefore the researcher uses random sampling to get the sample. Finally, sample which used as source of data are 38 students. Instruments which used in this research are questionnaire and test. Questionnaire is used to get data from students’ metacognition variable. Then, test is used to get data from writing ability variable. The data which collected have been analyzed with two ways. First, by using descriptive analyzed, to get general describe about research variables. Second, by using statistical analyzed, to look for rightness of hypothesis by using “r” Product Moment of Pearson.Based on the descriptive analyzed, students’ metacognition variable was in good category. This is known from questionnaire students’ result, 2,75. While, students’ writing ability was in bad category, where students get 51,18 in writing ability test. Then, statistical analyzed showed that hypothesis of this research was acceptable, where  higher than , or 0,441 > 0,329. It means, there is significant correlation between students’ metacognition and their writing ability, a study to the Fourth Semester of English Department STKIP “Tapanuli Selatan” Padangsidimpuan in 2011/2012 Academic Year.
